Hunter College is a senior college in New York City, New York state's most populous city and the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the world's most populous metropolitan areas, the city housing approximately 8.4 million people, within its limits (2009). New York is also the most densely populated major city in the United States and the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
Hunter was established in 1870, tracing its roots back to the nineteenth-century movement for normal school training, which swept across the United States. It was originally a women's college for training teachers and was founded by Irish immigrant Thomas Hunter, who was president of the school during the first 37 years.
The college currently offers its students undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in more than 100 fields of study, through 6 schools, and is nationally recognized for its diverse student body and academic excellence.
Hunter's athletic teams are nicknamed the Hawks and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold.
Since first opening its doors to students, Hunter has produced numerous notable alumni, who have made themselves noteworthy in various areas, among which we also find: Martina Arroyo - opera singer, Wilson Jermaine Heredia - Tony Award-winning actor, Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick - Judge, first Hispanic woman named to the New York State Court of Appeals, Thomas P.
